Audience and Visitor Research and Stakeholder Engagement

RSPB, Purfleet, Essex
We carried out research to produce an Access and Audience Development Plan for Rainham, Wellington and Aveley Marshes RSPB Nature Reserve for a Heritage Lottery Grant Application (now approved). This represented on the RSPB’s first urban nature reserves.

The study included an analysis of current audiences, analysis of the barriers to participation, setting objectives for audience development with priority audiences and measurable targets and developing an action plan to achieve objectives for each target audience. We also developed an evaluation and monitoring plan.

Hylton Castle & Dene Audience Development Plan
We assisted with the production of an ADP for Hylton Castle & Dene. Hylton Castle and Hylton Dene are located in Sunderland and the castle is one of the oldest secular buildings in the City and Hylton Dene is a popular park that is of recreational value and ecological interest. The plan included a wide ranging research programme with current and missed Audiences and the production of an action plan.

River Lambourn Urban Restoration Project, Newbury, Berkshire
Working with another research consultancy we completed an Audience Development Plan for the final 2.5km of the River Lambourn as it flows through Newbury, Berkshire. The plans will support a bid in the region of £1 million to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project aims to bring badly needed improvements to a locally important green
space as well as providing an opportunity to increase awareness of the river’s place in local history and its significant heritage value.

It will provide a valuable educational opportunity to raise awareness of issues surrounding the way society interacts with local freshwater environments. A key aim of the work with the Pang, Kennet & Lambourn Valley Countryside Project was to carry out consultation which leads to increased community involvement and which leaves a good legacy in terms of improved and ongoing communication with the local community about the site.

Wat Tyler Country Park, Essex
We completed an Audience Development Plan for Wat Tyler Country Park in support a Heritage Lottery Fund grant application. Our work involved carrying out a market assessment (including primary research), identifying barriers to access which discouraged visitors and suggesting ways overcome the barriers to increase
visitor levels.

North Soar, Nottinghamshire
Destination study – North Soar is an attractive rural area of approximately 50 square miles located to the south of Nottingham and north of Loughborough. The area has a number of walking, cycling and horse riding trails. PSCL were commissioned by the North Soar Trails Syndicate to carry out stakeholder engagement and primary research with the local community and tourism businesses into the opportunity of creating a tourist destination, initially based, on these activities (and heritage assets). Along with the research a major consultation exercise helped to identify the potential development opportunities leading to the production of a Structured Action Plan to take forward initiatives to help create a ‘tourist destination’.
